WELCOME TO

GALES

One of the oldest buildings in Llangollen and the FIRST wine bar in North Wales!

The Gales Story

The building that houses Gales, 18 Bridge Street, has been welcoming travellers for centuries. In the late 17th century, it was known as the Lion Inn — one of many hostelries serving those journeying between London and Dublin. The building next door, now our Wine Shop, was once the Butchers Arms.

In 1977, Richard Gale transformed the site into North Wales’ very first Wine Bar. Inspired by the “wine bar lifestyle,” he wanted to create a space that was both relaxed and full of character. What started as just nine tables quickly became a landmark in Llangollen, with the town and wider community embracing this new style of hospitality.

Initially the reception was mixed – this was, after all, the first Wine Bar in North Wales! Over 35 years, however, local support has ensured the ongoing success of Gales and underpinned the development of the business that now includes Gales Wine Bar and Hotel.

Gales was an extension of Richard’s personality. It’s a business but it has to be fun. Fun was, after all, the cornerstone of Richard’s life philosophy. That spirit shaped Gales for decades, and still does today.

Richard is sadly no longer with us, but his son, Pip, is a member of the new team at Gales.

A NEW ERA

TODAY

Richard’s son, Pip, continues to be part of Gales’ story alongside the new owners, Tangerine Trees. With fresh energy and a passion for keeping Gales true to its roots, the team is focused on celebrating everything that makes this place special: good food, great wine, live music, and a warm welcome.

From our award-winning wine bar and cosy hotel rooms, to the lively events and our much-loved wine garden, Gales remains at the heart of Llangollen life – just as it has for nearly 50 years.
